Best of critical neonatal care for the needy

Cognizant Foundation extended support and provided Matri Bhavan with critical care equipment for setting up its second neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This project formally inaugurated on February 01, 2016 by Cognizant Foundation Kolkata Core Committee members.

Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Matri Bhavan, founded in 1950, is a 100-bed charitable hospital run under the auspices of the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, Kolkata, serving women and children from the middle and lower socio-economic sections of the society. The hospital also offers community welfare services and value-based education and has significant focus on women empowerment. Services are provided at subsidized rates and depending on the economic background of the patients, further concession/free services are provided.

At Marti Bhavan’s existing NICU (NICU -1) it was not possible to admit newborns referred to from other hospitals since these babies have more complications and carry high infection risk. The hospital  had to turn these babies away earlier. Now, with a separate NICU -2 set up, Matri Bhavan is able to treat babies from referred to from outside. Free treatment for babies with parents who cannot afford to pay very nominal charges from those who can.

Matri Bhavan caters to over 35,000 women and children every year. Annually, over 15,000 neonates are treated in the outdoor and indoor sections. The opening of this NICU-2 would benefit 15 – 20 babies per month, who are now being denied the facility.
