CARING FOR THE SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD

The Sensory Integration Therapy Room at weCan Learning Resource Institute, Kolkata was formally inaugurated on January 22, 2016 by Cognizant Foundation Kolkata Core Committee members.

CF extended support to weCan for setting up a Sensory Integration Therapy Room for treatment of children with learning disabilities.

weCan is an organization working with children with special needs and having conditions like dyslexia,  downs syndrome, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, etc. It is a multidisciplinary initiative to provide remedial intervention to children with learning disabilities. weCan works to channelize these kids towards academic goals and ensure they remain a part of the main stream education. This is done by use of strategies and therapies to deliver the mainstream curriculum. weCan tries to support as many underprivileged children as possible.

Most children with special needs suffer from sensory integration disorder that impairs their learning skills. Sensory integration therapy (SIT) is the mainstream clinical approach to treat the same. SIT, occupational therapy, speech therapy, play therapy and music therapy are used to get an autistic child or a hyperactive child in a state of readiness to learn, absorb and remember. Without a SIT facility weCan could not ensure comprehensive intervention. Now, with the SIT set-up 300-500 children per month will be benefitted over the next 5-10 years. weCan will be giving SIT free of cost.

This facility will benefit the lives of 300-500 children in the in a year.
