Story of Mathangi

It is not easy to come out and prove that a female member of the family can provide livelihood to run a household.

Mathangi*, a 20-year-old from a remote village from Koppal, proved exactly that! Coming from an agricultural family, she was supposed to take permission from her maternal uncle to make any decision for her own life. With the demise of her father, she was completely dependent on her mother for all her economic, social and psychological needs. With lack of support towards good education from her uncle, she decided to drop out of school and was at home most of time with marriage looming on her head, which she strongly resisted since the age of 16.

Life took its turn when SIRDS team visited the village on a mobilisation drive for the Garments Making Training in Koppal supported by Cognizant Foundation. Initially her uncle said no due to the distance that she will have to travel, but her firm decision prevailed at the end. Life at the SIRDS campus excited her. Surrounded by machines, she was very quick to learn the trade and was always first to demonstrate.

After successfully completing training, trouble started again after she expressed her desire to work in the industrial sector. Fortunately, she was selected by Aditya Birla Apparels as a trainee immediately after the completion of the course.

She stood strong and went against the decision of her maternal uncle who told her that if she goes to work against his decision, he will not help her family anymore. It took several days for her to make up her mind, and with silent support from her mother, she took grabbed the waiting opportunity at Aditya Birla Apparels.

She started her career as a trainee tailor with a monthly salary of 8700 per month, and quickly mastered the trade. She was further trained as multi-skilled employee where she mastered 4 different skills, enabling her to join any production line that the company wants her to take up, along with an additional pay hike. Currently she works in the same company on a monthly salary of Rs 12000+. She attributes her success to SIRDS and Cognizant Foundation.
“I was nowhere with obstacles everywhere! You made me work towards change. Today I stand changed and have brought change in my family too.  People who went away from my family have come back and have continued to support me after seeing what I have achieved.” Thank you Cognizant Foundation, SIRDS and my employer Aditya Birla Apparels, Hosa Road.  Mathangi*, a 20-year-old from a remote village from Koppal, proved exactly that!
