Learning Centre at a school catering to slum children

Christel House International (CHI) is a registered, non-profit organization which provides holistic care to underprivileged children – education, food, counselling and healthcare. Its Indian chapter was set up in 2001 in Bangalore.  CHI runs a day school that caters to about 900 children from slums within 18 kms from the school. The school has classes from Kindergarten to Grade XII and employs 76 teachers.

Children at Christel House are mainly first generation learners, for whom English is almost an unknown language. While the children learn to read and write, they struggle with the nuances of the language – diction, clarity of speech, pronunciation etc. This reality was brought home when their first batch of students entered mainstream colleges in Karnataka and struggled in the area of communication. Christel House therefore proposed to set up an English Language Lab that would be used to train all the children from Kindergarten to Std. XII and will complement the regular classroom sessions.

In October 2014, CF funded an English Language laboratory for Christel House International (CHI) run day school in Bangalore. On 16 January 2015, the brand new English Language Lab with capabilities to train students from Kindergarten to Class 12 was inaugurated by Mr Hariraj Vijayakumar, Global Head, Cognizant Academy.
