Sophisticated ophthalmic equipment

Cognizant Foundation has funded the purchase of sophisticated ophthalmic care equipment for Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama Charitable Hospital (SRAC), Thiruvananthapuram. The advanced equipment used in cataract eye surgery includes a Phacoemulsification System, an operating microscope and an eye operation table. Phacoemulsification System is a new standard in cataract surgery and helps improve visualization, speed up surgery and preserve the delicate structures of the eye while removing an opaque lens.

This equipment will augment the facilities at the hospital’s fully-renovated Swami Vivekananda ophthalmic operating theatre, which was formally inaugurated by Sri. C.N. Balakrishnan, Minister for Co-operation, Government of Kerala, on June 16, 2015 in the presence of Dr G.C.Gopala Pillai, Chairman, Keltron; Mr S. Madhavan, CEO, Cognizant Foundation.

SRAC was established in 1940 and is one of the branch centers of Ramakrishna Math, Belur. It is a 200-bed multi-specialty hospital and provides either free or highly subsidized medical treatment to poor patients from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. SRAC‘s ophthalmic department has two permanent eye specialists and caters to nearly 100 patients in the outpatient department every day. With the installation of this equipment in the ophthalmic operation theatre, the department will be able to perform 700 additional surgeries annually.

The Ashrama also runs rural health service centres at six different villages in and around Thiruvananthapuram, serving nearly 9,500 patients every year. The services rendered from these rural health centres are fully free.
