Cognizant Foundation has supported Girivanvasi Educational Trust, Thane, Maharashtra for upgrading the Library and Science Laboratory at the Nareshwadi Learning Center to help improve the quality of education provided to the rural & tribal children. Over 750 underprivileged rural and tribal children will be benefitted by this upgrade in the school.
Girivanvasi Educational Trust (GVET) was established in 1991 by Padmabhushan Shri Karamshi J Somaiya to provide holistic education for children of the migrant tribal community in Dahanu Taluka, Maharashtra State. Over 670 underprivileged children from 5 to 17 years of age study at GVET’s campus known as the Nareshwadi Learning Center (NLC). Of these 95% are from the local tribal communities and 5% are AIDS orphans and other homeless children.
NLC is providing free education to students from 1 to 10 standard, hostels for girls and boys. Some of NLC’s achievements in the past 5 years are – improvement in girl children enrolment from 22% to 45%; improved academic performance from 13% to 100% pass at the SSC Board Exams; award for several students at the annual Taluka Science Competition for schools; regular monitoring; children reach the top 5 positions at the State level in athletics.
